ACWC Convenes an Open Session with the HRRC During 9th ACWC Meeting

Yangon, 15 October 2014—During the Ninth Meeting of the ASEAN Commission on the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Women and Children (ACWC), held from 13-15 October in Yangon, the Human Rights Resource Centre was honoured to have been granted an open session with the ACWC. Represented by its Executive Director, Mr. Marzuki Darusman, the HRRC provided the ACWC with a brief background of the Centre and suggested ways in which that background places the HRRC in a unique position to support the work of the ACWC. Marzuki Darusman also gave an overview of the work of the Centre that pertains to the rights of women and children in ASEAN, and demonstrated how and why the HRRC sees the welfare of women and children as a key indicator of the overall welfare of the ASEAN Community.

The Executive Director concluded by offering a few suggestions as to how the HRRC might be able to work more closely with the ACWC to drive forward the regional agenda to promote and protect the rights of women and children in ASEAN. The HRRC is grateful for the opportunity to present what it perceives are the possible areas in which it can collaborate with the ACWC and looks forward to further discussions on possible modalities of cooperation with the Commission.
